The Common Core Standards are the new standards for the state of Kansas in the areas of Language Arts and Math. However, they have guidelines for reading and problem solving in the areas of science and social studies, too. To be fair, the common core will increase the rigor and responsibility of every subject as reading in all classes and in all areas on a regular basis will be needed for students to achieve at these new standards. 49 states have adopted these standards, which means for the first time all teachers can share best practices because for the most part all curriculum in the common core areas will be the same across the nation. However, it also could be construed by some as a way to gauge the quality of the state's educational system to that of the rest of the nation, but I tend to look at it as an opportunity to improve the quality of education of the nation by widespread collaboration and focused efforts rather than a competition between states.
